GPT-6 Sol is OpenAI’s September 22, 2026 model for complex coding and agentic work, released the same day as the lighter GPT-6 Luna. It takes text and image input, returns text, and has a 1,050,000-token context window with up to 128,000 output tokens. OpenAI says it was trained with methods similar to GPT-6 Astra and makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor.
OpenAI lists GPT-6 Sol at $2 per million input tokens, $0.20 cached and $10 output. Prompts over 272K input tokens cost 2× input and 1.5× output for the whole request. The table above shows OpenRouter’s recorded rates, which can differ from OpenAI’s direct price. Reasoning, tool calls and transcript length all change what a real turn costs.
Both have a 1,050,000-token context window. GPT-5.6 Sol launched at $5 input and $30 output per million tokens and OpenAI has cut its price since, so check current rates side by side rather than assuming the newer model is cheaper. Run the same prompt on both to judge quality for your task: compare GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-6 Sol.
Use Sol for multi-step work that needs checking: code, research with sources, spreadsheets with formulas. Luna costs a twentieth as much per token and suits high-volume, clearly scoped tasks such as summarizing, extraction and quick answers. See GPT-6 Luna vs GPT-6 Sol, or GPT-6 Sol vs Claude Opus 5.5, released the same day.
