Claude Fable pricing, without the monthly commitment
Need Fable for one project? Use Claude Fable 5.1 in OpenCraft with pay-as-you-go credits and no monthly Claude subscription. Here’s how that compares with Claude’s paid plans and direct API access.
Do you need a paid plan to use Claude Fable?
In Claude’s own app, Fable is available on paid plans. Outside that subscription, you can use the model through metered API access or a workspace such as OpenCraft. You pay for the work you run without maintaining a monthly Claude plan.
| Where you use it | How you pay | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | Subscription plus Fable usage credits | You already use Claude’s app |
| Claude Max | Subscription with a limited Fable allowance | Frequent work within the included allowance |
| Claude API | Metered API usage | You want to build or configure an integration |
| OpenCraft | Usage credits; no monthly subscription | You want a ready-to-use workspace for an occasional project |
Anthropic’s plan documentation distinguishes access to Fable from usage included in a subscription. OpenCraft gives you the model inside OpenCraft’s tools and interface; it does not unlock Claude Pro, Max, or Claude Code.
How much does Claude Fable 5.1 cost?
Anthropic lists Fable 5.1 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Cache reads cost $0.25 per million tokens. These are published API rates, not a fixed price per message or finished file.
For example, 10,000 uncached input tokens and 2,000 output tokens cost $0.20 at those base rates: $0.10 for input plus $0.10 for output. That is an illustrative token calculation, not a measured OpenCraft task. Reasoning, repeated context, and tool calls can increase the total.
What you pay on OpenCraft
Check the current model catalog for the selected model’s rates. OpenCraft meters model and tool usage against your balance. Credit purchases have a 15% service fee: $5 of usage credit costs $5.75. The fee is charged when buying credits; it is not a monthly charge. See the billing terms.
A longer research session can cost more than a short answer because it may involve several model calls and web searches. Image and video generation have their own charges. Decide based on the total cost of your workflow, rather than assuming every message has the same price.
Why does Fable ask for usage credits on Pro?
Fable is available on Pro, but its usage is outside Pro’s included allowance. That explains why paying for Pro does not remove the additional Fable meter. On Max, some Fable usage is included; usage credits let you continue after reaching its allowance. Check the current plan rules.
Claude usage credits, Claude API billing, and OpenCraft credits belong to separate accounts and services. A balance on one does not transfer to another. If you already have included Fable usage on Max, using that allowance may be better value than purchasing additional access elsewhere.
How to use Fable without a Claude subscription
- Open OpenCraft and choose Claude Fable 5.1 in the chat model picker. Check its current availability and price.
- Create an OpenCraft account to purchase credits when needed. You do not need a personal Anthropic API key.
- Add your project notes or source files and describe the result you want: a decision brief, revised document, spreadsheet, or slide deck.
- Review the result and recorded usage. For follow-up work, keep Fable selected or choose a less expensive model.
Try a bounded task first: “Read these notes, identify the three decisions we need to make, and draft a two-page decision brief with assumptions and open questions.” A clear deliverable gives you a useful way to judge quality and cost before committing to a larger project.
Is a subscription or pay-as-you-go better for you?
Pay-as-you-go is a useful fit when you need Fable for a few difficult tasks, want to compare models, or go weeks without using an AI workspace. There is no recurring bill to justify during quiet months.
A subscription can be better value for steady daily use, especially when your work fits its included allowance and you rely on Claude-specific features. OpenCraft’s advantage is flexible access and a workspace for producing files; it is not a promise that every workload costs less.
For an occasional project, start with the smallest useful task and inspect the actual spend. For frequent use, compare a representative week of work with what your subscription includes. Our Cowork pricing guide covers the broader workspace plans.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude Fable without a subscription?
Yes. OpenCraft offers Fable 5.1 with usage-based credits and no monthly Claude subscription. Direct Claude API access is also metered separately from Claude subscriptions. Neither option includes the Claude app’s paid-plan features.
Is Claude Fable included in Pro?
Fable 5 and 5.1 are accessible on Pro, but they use separately purchased usage credits rather than Pro’s included usage allowance. Anthropic’s plan rules were checked September 8, 2026.
Is Claude Fable free?
Fable is a paid model. Trial or promotional credits may cover some usage, but no subscription does not mean free or unlimited generation. Check the selected model’s rates and your available balance before starting.
Does Claude Max include Fable?
Yes. Anthropic allows up to 50% of the weekly usage limit on Max to be spent on Fable models. Beyond that, you can purchase usage credits or switch models within the remaining plan allowance.
Do I need an API key to use Fable on OpenCraft?
No personal Anthropic API key is needed. Choose Fable 5.1 in OpenCraft’s model picker and use your OpenCraft balance. Availability and current rates appear in the model catalog.
